In May 2012, Biochemical Society Transactions introduced Gateways to the online journal as a means of categorising papers into collections by topic, aiding research communities and strengthening the journal's reputation as a quality educational resource.

The Gateways are representative of the themes of the Biochemical Society's Conference Programme ensuring that, regardless of whether speakers present their research as an Award Lecture, at an Independent Meeting, a Focused Meeting or at the Society's Annual Symposium, the resulting mini-review article fits seamlessly into one of the journal's six new online subject area collections
